I have a question and truly hope you might be able to give me a hand. Feel free to leave your ideas in the comments of this blog posting, and no idea is to stupid. I would really like your help.
Here is my situation. My girlfriend and I are on a network with a net-gear router. This net-gear router goes into starband equipment to pass us to the internet. Well, starband is a sat-alight internet company, and sadly is the only internet that’s around here we can use. I personally don’t like the fact that we get a 2GB Download bye 300MB Upload limit seven day rolling period, average for $69.95,however, if i want internet i can’t complain. Anyways, a bit more information. Me and my girlfriend live with her parents. Sometimes, we want to talk about stuff that we don’t want anyone else to here. So, typically we would send each other IM’s on either msn/yahoo/gtalk/facebook/myspace/aim and talk that way. See, we both use mac computers and use adium for our instant messaging needs.
Now to the problem, when our internet goes out either because of our limits being reached or because of bad weather situations, and i have something i need to say to her, i normally have to some how signal to her that we should go talk in the other room. My “Winking” at her or gesturing toward her typically isn’t the easiest to do, me being blind and all, and her signaling to me is completely out of the question… That and us randomly getting up and walking out of the room will just cause it to seem like were hiding something. So what i was thinking is is there a server, jabber or such, that could do the following:
a: Be installed locally. I would use this on any network that were on with each other, however normally this would be used on our own home personal network. I was thinking to “Install” locally, that would be able for me to install it on my mac.
b: Have the ability to be configured. I would figure that i would need to configure this server. Either web interface, i would prefer, or conf files i could edit bye hand. I however, would hope there was good documentation for that particular server and how to configure it.
C: could be used with adium. The software that adium supports can be viewed at, www.adiumx.com and i believe Jabber is one of those features.
This doesn’t need anything fancy, it doesn’t need to do voice or video, it’s just something we can use for basic text conversations. I do await your ideas and suggestions. Also, if you have a friend who might be able to give me a hand with this, let them know that I’m looking for there ideas.
Thanks a lot for reading, and as i previously said, any ideas will be accepted.
thanks
Michael
